963 AD The region of Luxembourg was established as an independent state.
1308> The Count of Luxembourg, Henry VII became the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
1354 The Duchy of Luxembourg was created by Charles IV.
1443 Luxembourg was conquered by Philip the Good. He was from Burgundy.
1684 Luxembourg was taken over by France.
1697 Spain took over Luxembourg.
1714 Luxembourg became a part of Austria.
1795 Luxembourg returned to French control.
1815 Luxembourg was made a grand duchy by the Congress of Vienna after the defeat of Emperor Napoleon I. The Netherlands technically ruled Luxembourg. However, Luxembourg mostly just governed themselves.
1890 Wilhelmina became queen of the Netherlands. Because the duchy's laws would not allow a woman to rule, Luxembourg broke away from Holland.
1912 A new law was passed allowing women to rule. Marie Adelaide of Nassau became the grand duchess.
1914-1918 Luxembourg was occupied by Germany during World War I
1919 Charlotte became the grand duchess.
1939-1945 Germany occupied Luxembourg during World War II.
Winter 1944-1945 Part of the Battle of the Bulge was fought in northern Luxembourg. Thousands of Americans that were killed in the battle were buried in Hamm.
1945 Luxembourg became a member of the United Nations.
1948 Luxembourg joined Benelux, an economic union.
1949 Luxembourg became a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
1950s During this decade, Luxembourg helped to found several European economic groups. They became the basis for the European Community
1964 Prince Jean became the grand duke after his mother, Charlotte, abdicated the throne.
1993 Luxembourg helped to found the European Union. The city of Luxembourg is the seat of several agencies of the European Union including the secretariat.
2000 Prince Jean abdicated the throne. His son, Prince Henri, became the grand duke.
2002 Luxembourg began to use the Euro
